Mandalas, meaning “circle” in Sanskrit, originated in India and appear in Hindu texts like the RigVeda. They spread across Asia (Tibet, Nepal, China, Japan, etc.) via Buddhist missionaries on the Silk Road.

Used in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Shintoism, mandalas serve as spiritual tools for meditation, rituals, and enlightenment. Tibetan monks are known for intricate sand mandalas.

Today, mandalas are also used for relaxation and self-expression.

Dating back to 1st century BCE, mandalas represent the universe, cosmic order, and spiritual realms. In both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, they are sacred, symbolic diagrams aiding in rituals and meditation. Sand mandalas reflect impermanence.

Mandalas are symmetrical, circular designs with a central focal point, surrounded by geometric patterns, spiritual symbols, and nature motifs. They can be monochrome or vibrant, simple or highly intricate.

Begins from the center and builds outward. Steps include drawing guides, sketching, outlining, and colouring. Sand mandalas involve placing coloured sand grain by grain and are often dismantled after completion to symbolise impermanence.
