An ancient art from early Egyptian and Roman techniques

Hrs per Session:  2

Glass painting is an ancient art form that evolved from early Egyptian and Roman techniques and flourished during medieval Europe with the creation of stained-glass windows in Gothic cathedrals, primarily in France, England, and Germany.

Traditionally used to depict religious stories and symbols, glass painting has cultural significance as a medium that transforms light and glass into luminous storytelling.

Today, it spans from traditional stained glass to modern decorative and craft applications worldwide. The art is created by applying specially formulated paints—either kiln-fired enamels or cold, air-drying paints—onto clean glass surfaces like windows, vases, or panels.

Techniques often involve outlining sections with a raised liquid leading to contain colors, layering translucent or opaque paints to create vibrant designs, and sometimes firing the glass to permanently fuse the paint. Materials include flat or shaped glass, transparent or opaque glass paints, outliners, and various brushes and tools. Glass painting balances craftsmanship and artistic expression, producing works ranging from intricate biblical scenes to contemporary abstract patterns that harness the unique interplay of light and color inherent to glass.
